Interview Summary
Kenneth Winkler served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in India from 1964 to 1966 in the Agriculture Program, and in the Czech Republic from 1995 to 1996 in the Education Program. Winkler grew up in San Diego with a background in farming. He studied Journalism at San Jose State University and started graduate school at San Francisco State University (SFSU). During a Peace Corps recruiting drive at SFSU, his counselor encouraged him to apply. Winkler applied and was invited to serve in India. Training for India began with an Outward Bound program in Puerto Rico. Marathi language, culture, and technical training were conducted at the University of California, Davis. His initial assignment was in Khed, near Pune, in the state of Maharashtra. Winkler worked closely with local Development Officers to introduce commercial poultry farming and develop a poultry farming cooperative. In his second year he moved to Kolhapur, and continued working with the cooperative. His Peace Corps experience in India set the direction for a career centered around his interest in Asia. Winkler and his wife later served in the Czech Republic at the Technical University of Liberec.Interview Accession
