Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Bob Shaw served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica - from 1969 to 1971. Bob wanted to be a Peace Corps Volunteer after meeting several Volunteers as a teenager when his family lived in Peru. His application was lost so he sent a letter to Director Blatchford with a copy to President Nixon. Bob was given a space in the Jamaica program in the Math program, but switched to Child Guidance which needed volunteers. During Bob’s in service training he passed the “deselection” process which cut his training group to 100 people. A Jamaican official started the Child Guidance program to train teachers. Bob worked with educators at all levels and met with college bound students to explore academic opportunities in the US. Bob served on the Director’s Advisory Group in country and hosts a blog now. The Director’s widow hosted a training group reunion in 2011.
