Interview with Emily Goldman, October 12, 2021

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Emily Goldman has the distinction of serving in Peace Corps at age three! Accordingly, Emily’s first language is Spanish. She, her older sister and her parents served as a family in Costa Rica, 1972-1976, when Peace Corps sought more volunteers with technical knowledge and Masters’ degrees, who tended to be older and with families. Upon her family’s return to the US, Emily decided she would join Peace Corps as an adult. After graduating from college, she served as an Africanized beekeeper in Honduras, 1991-1993. She lived in a tiny village in SW Honduras, La Florida de Opatoro. In addition to beekeeping, she taught bee safety, English, vegetable gardening, and taught a local mother how to read and write. She calls Peace Corps service “living my values”, and advises potential volunteers to seek experiences outside their comfort zones--to grow in ways that otherwise would not be possible.

You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.
