Interview with Kerry Johnson, April 24, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Kerry Johnson served in the Peace Corps in Guinea (1965-1966) and Niger (1967) working in education. After retirement, he worked through Peace Corps Response in Guinea (2010), Senegal (2011-2012), Benin (2013-2015) and Guinea again (2020), in several fields including education, economic development, agriculture, and IT network design and installation. Kerry has the distinction of being evacuated twice by Peace Corps. The first instance was in 1966 when the president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, was overthrown, which Guinea attributed to the CIA. As a result, all Peace Corps personnel were put under house arrest and promptly removed from the country. The second instance was in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has applied to return to Guinea as a Response volunteer once the pandemic no longer restricts it. Kerry tells people to join Peace Corps if they want to help others; Peace Corps will give them the support they need.Interview Accession
