Project Summary

Otis Arnold Singletary, born in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1921, received a B.A. degree from Millsaps College in 1947 and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 1954. He served in the United States Navy during both World War II and the Korean War. Singletary taught at the University of Texas--Austin from 1954 to 1961, when he became chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During 1964 and 1965, he served as the first director of the Job Corps of the federal government's Office of Economic Opportunity. In 1966, Singletary became vice-president of the American Council on Education, and from 1968 to 1969, he served as vice-chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Texas. He was president of the University of Kentucky from 1969 until his retirement in 1987. These interviews with Singletary document his academic career.
