Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Janis Mena served in the Dominican Republic, 1978-1981, in nutrition and health. She wanted to teach nutrition to help people, and so answered affirmatively when PC asked, β€œAre you ready to dedicate two years of your life?” Training was in San Pedro de Macoris, DR. Training prepared her well to work with the Department of Agriculture out of Las Martas de Farfan. Janis and another PCV taught health and nutrition; received grants for sewing machines and latrines; helped build clay stoves; put on agricultural fairs; and worked with women's gardening groups. Janis said Dominicans are gracious, receptive and full of life. After service, she worked as a PC trainer. At the University of Florida, she traveled to underserved areas around Gainesville, continuing her PC mission. She is married to a Dominican. She said Peace Corps showed her that what we all want is to give our kids a better life.
