Interview with James Conlan, May 7, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
James Conlan discusses serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, from 1968 through 1970, in the Education Program. Conlan saw this as a positive alternative to military service, and the Peace Corps was recruiting couples for the Marshall Islands at that time. Their training was one of the earliest to be conducted in-country, in Majuro, the district capital. Training included Marshallese language, culture, and living with a host family. Conlan and his wife Kate were assigned to teach English in Majuro. He later worked in the Education Department’s Audio-Visual Center utilizing his art skills to prepare educational materials. After completing his service, he and his wife remained in Majuro for two years on contract.Interview Accession
