Interview with Gerald "Jerry" Bauer, February 13, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Gerald “Jerry” Bauer served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, from 1975 through 1977, in the Environment Program. Jerry’s interest in Peace Corps began when he heard RPCVs speak about their experiences, and the “The Toughest Job You'll Ever Love” recruitment pitch. Training took place in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, including host family stay. Jerry worked as Assistant to the Chief in the Santa Barbara office of Corporación Hondureña de Desarrollo Forestal (COHDEFOR). Duties included inspecting saw mills, community education, and reforestation. He trained fire crews and mapped pine forests. He also set up a forest field station in a more remote area. Jerry extended and was assigned to Colombia, but due to job issues and unsatisfactory response from local Peace Corps staff, he returned home. His career with the U.S. Forest Service and assignments with USAID have taken him to Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. He helped found non-governmental organizations such as the Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation, and the Panamerican Conservation Association. Jerry credits Peace Corps for setting him on his career and life path in Latin America and the Caribbean.
