Interview with Katie Peel, October 12, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Katie Peel served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Poland in 1997 through 1999, in the Education Program. Katie was aware of Peace Corps from a young age, and decided to join after meeting a recruiter at Wesleyan University. While in a Semester Abroad program in France, Katie traveled to other countries, including Poland. That experience persuadedher to select Eastern Europe as a preference. Katie’s training cohort was Poland 13. Language, culture, and technical training was conducted in the town of Radom. After training, Katie was assigned to a high school in Polkowice, where she taught English. Her secondary projects included a summer camp in Karpacz, focused on English language proficiency. The interview discusses experiences living with a host family, bonding with fellow volunteers during training, working and living at her post, and reflections on Peace Corps Service. It also discusses the experience of a single woman, and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, as a volunteer.Interview Accession
