Interview with John Reed, February 28, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

John Reed served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Solomon Islands from 1997 to 1999, in the Education Program. John and his wife Julie had graduated from college and were working in Seattle when they decided to take leave from their jobs and volunteer. John knew of Peace Corps from an early age because his mother spoke of it, and wished she had volunteered. The Reeds were initially invited to serve in Guyana, but timing was not right. They were then selected for Solomon Islands Group 52. During training, they were initially housed at a convent near Honiara, and then were placed with a host family. Training included Solomon Islands Pijen language, culture, and life skills. They were assigned to a village on Ghupuna Bay on Santa Ana island. John taught Math and Science to Forms 1 and 2 at a community high school that was part of a World Bank project. He also helped finish construction of the school, and started an Industrial Arts class. The Reeds remain involved in RPCV activities, and belong to the Santa Barbara Peace Corps Association.
