Interview with Russell Love, January 26, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Russell Love and his wife served in Niger, 1974-1976, as TEFL teachers. Both had been Peace Corps volunteers in Africa—Russell in Togo and his wife in Chad. Because they were experienced volunteers, they received no additional training. Upon arrival in Niger, the couple was assigned to teach English at a small public school in Tahoua. They were given living accommodations on the school grounds. The school staff was mostly from abroad, and there were many foreign-assistance workers in the town, both French and German (Russell was familiar with both languages), who became their social circle. In addition to his regular duties, Russell served as a soccer referee, taught French to German workers, and also taught English in a teaching college. Peace Corps left them on their own in Niger. Russell was constantly reminded of how hard life is for the people of the region and how fortunate he felt.Interview Accession
