Interview with Gary Randolph, March 8, 2023
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Gary Randolph served in the Czech Republic, 1993-1996, working on environmental matters. He said he was drawn to serving one’s country by volunteering in another. Training was in Poděbrady castle. He learned to say “I love beer” in Czech which served as an icebreaker with his host family and foretold the popularity of his “English Pub Club.” To help him learn Czech, his host mother labeled objects in the home with their Czech names. Gary had two permanent sites in the Krkonoše National Park— the National Park Administration in Vrchlabí, and the Czech Environmental Education Center in Horní Maršov. During his third year, Gary added working with GLOBE, a US organization, on environmental monitoring. One of his proudest moments was working with a Polish PCV on a bilateral park working agreement. Gary thinks everyone should volunteer and strongly encourages volunteers to keep a journal of their thoughts and feelings.Interview Accession
