Interview Summary

Charles Bole was born in 1929 and was eight years old at the time of the 1937 flood in Newport, Kentucky. He describes living through the flood and the damage it caused to his family's house and property. He talks about working from a young age, hauling coal with his uncle and working at a grocery store. When he was sixteen he began working for the mafia during the gambling era in Newport. He talks about dealing cards at mafia-owned clubs, and talks about some of the murders perpetrated at the time. He talks about George Ratterman, the deputy sheriff sent to clean up the crime in Newport. Bole also served in the Army during the Korean War and talks about military life and his opinion on the war.
