Interview with Burt Lazarin, November 30, 2022
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Burt Lazarin served in Chile, 1968-1970, and Peru, 1970, in urban planning. In graduate school he learned of a PC program for urban planning in Chile and applied. He received a draft exemption, and entered three months’ total language immersion training. Burt’s program involved establishing local urban planning offices. He was assigned to a working-class barrio in Santiago. This site didn’t interest his country cohort, so Burt ended up in the central ministry, finding his own work to do. He said his director treated volunteers gently, even when they protested US involvement in Cambodia. Chile was life-changing for Burt. He came out as a gay man there. He found Lima to be less welcoming than Santiago and left after a few months. PC's influence on Burt's life includes a stronger sense of self, realizing that there’s more than one way to be in and see the world, and life-long friends.Interview Accession
