Interview with Chikamso Chukwu, July 29, 2020
Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Chikamso Chukwu served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Timor-Leste from October 2018 until she was evacuated because of COVID-19 in March 2020. She taught English at the middle and high school levels in Liquiçá and was in the process of developing a school-based community library with her counterparts when she was evacuated. Chukwu, a first-generation Nigerian-American, speaks about better blending in with the Timorese because of her color while standing out more as an American volunteer. She speaks about COVID- and economy-related tensions and the shock of being evacuated so quickly, especially not being able to complete the library project and not being able to say good-bye to her host family and colleagues. She says Peace Corps was very empowering. As an outsider, she was able to help people see what was possible. It made her more confident that she can do anything she sets out to do.Interview Accession
