Interview with John Trumper, September 1, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
John Trumper was one of the first Peace Corps Medical Officers (PCMO) serving in the Dominican Republic from 1962 to 1964, and in Bogotá, Columbia from Jan. 1964 to June 1964. He was recruited by the U.S. Public Health Service because of his work on the Navajo Indian reservation. He tells many stories about traveling around DR with Andy Hernandez (CD) locating Volunteer housing before the volunteers arrived. Also, before the volunteers arrived, he was instrumental in handling the customs delivery of 40 jeeps for the Volunteers’ use. He was responsible for the medical care of all Volunteers, which started with 25-30 people and swelled to 200+. His secondary activity was as a volunteer at the maternity hospital. One of his enduring memories of the people in DR was their profound sadness regarding the assassination of President Kennedy. He concludes by communicating his faith in the work of the Peace Corps as well as a hope that that work continues after the COVID-19 pandemic.Interview Accession
