Interview with Emily Odhiambo, October 17, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Emily Odhiambo served in Kenya in the Education sector from 1999-2002. She taught at a secondary school where she was the only woman in her group. She noted that her colleagues had similar training, but taught using the same methods as their teachers. Since she was a recent college graduate Emily found the in-service training observation and teacher training activities to be useful for her future assignment. In addition to English, Emily was asked to teach history, religious education, and life skills which included AIDS education. The Peace Corps office required volunteers to have a concrete floor in an area where most homes had mud floors. Emily’s home had a metal roof and mud walls. She had several rooms including a kitchen. For transportation she had a bicycle to ride to a town that had electricity to make phone calls. The nearest Internet café was a bus ride away from this town.Interview Accession
