Interview with Dan Goering, April 16, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Dan Goering grew up with Mennonite roots practicing pacifism. He was looking for an alternate path to serving his country during the Vietnam War. He received conscientious objector status. Goering graduated from Antioch College with a degree in economics. He was accepted to a Peace Corps cooperative accounting project in the Dominican Republic. His Outward Bound training program in Camp Crozier in Arecibo, Puerto Rico prepared him well for his assignment. One piece of advice stood out: “Don’t turn down hospitality.” He was thankful he was so welcomed. His cooperative work with two counterparts based in San Jose de Ocoa extended to 11 other communities. He was told by a friend that there had been local Maoists who had plans, unrealized, to harm him. The community protected him. Visiting 40 years after service, he found his accounting systems are still in place.Interview Accession
