Interview with Larry E. Gilleland, January 9, 2024

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Larry E. Gilleland served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic (DR) from 1962-64 in a well drilling program. He talks about growing up on a farm in Georgia and applying to the Peace Corps without a college degree because he was tired of the job he had. He discusses training in Puerto Rico and arriving in the DR to find out that the Dominican government had requested well-drilling machinery, not people. After a month in Puerto Viejo waiting for an assignment, his group was told to find useful projects for themselves. He led the construction of rooves on three schools being built by other Peace Corps Volunteers. He says the Peace Corps opened up the world to him. He met his wife Anne, a young Danish woman who grew up in the DR; he worked internationally as do his children; and he and his wife are retired and living in the DR.
