Project: Scott County (Kentucky) Public Library: Scott County Veterans Oral History Project
Interview Summary
This is an interview with Vietnam War veteran Harry Morgan who enlisted in the Navy in 1966 and trained as corpsman. He talks about growing up in a coal mining family in Ohio, his decision to enlist, his training, and his growing realization that he would likely be sent to Vietnam. After spending more than a year at a hospital in the Philippines, he was attached to the 3rd Marines and spent 1969-1970 in Vietnam as part of the CAP (Combined Action Program) counterinsurgency effort in I Corps. Morgan recounts his activities with the CAP program, which included medical treatment of Vietnamese villagers as well as his time with Marines on patrol and ambush. He also addresses issues of reintegration back to civilian life and how his training influenced him to enter the nursing profession afterward. Morgan reflects on his part in the war and the United States' role in Vietnam before finishing the interview.Interview Accession
