Project: Peace Corps: COVID-19 Evacuated Peace Corps Volunteers Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Sarah Stagner served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines from 2018 to 2020 in the education program. Sarah decided to join Peace Corps after attending an information session at the University of Virginia, where she was studying environmental science. Sarah’s training was conducted outside of Manila, with training group 277. Training included Tagalog and Visayan (Bisaya) languages. Sarah was assigned to teach science and English at Tambisan National High School in Tambisan, San Juan, Siquijor. She also led a project to rebuild a library and make it functional. Sarah lived with a host family for her entire stay, with whom she became very close. Sarah was part of the Peace Corps COVID evacuation in 2020. She had to leave her site on short notice, without saying goodbye to many friends and colleagues. Living in the Philippines reinforced Sarah’s interest in preserving marine habitats.
