Interview with Leah Blair, July 6, 2022

Project: University of Kentucky: Libraries Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Leah Blair, a native of Paintsville, Kentucky, graduated from the University of Kentucky (UK) in May 2022 with undergraduate majors in biology and anthropology. During her years as an undergraduate student at UK, Blair also worked as an archives student assistant in the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center (SCRC). In this interview with her supervisor, Ruth Bryan, Blair briefly describes her academic work and her work in Special Collections, including projects she worked on. In particular, she provides additional description on her preservation and description work for the SCRC’s documentation project “In This Together: Documenting COVID-19 in the Commonwealth,” which took place from April 2020 through May 2021. Blair and another student assistant (and her friend) Alex Reaugh prepared 326 born-digital submissions from students in two Global Health Dynamics classes (GEO 261) in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 for upload into a collection guide to the entire collection. Blair reflects on themes she found in the submissions and on the impact of COVID-19 on her own academic, social, and personal life. Finally, Blair describes the impact working in SCRC has had on her life and finishes the interview by demonstrating how she would explain her work in SCRC to an incoming freshman at UK.

You may come across language in UK Libraries Special Collections Research Center collections and online resources that you find harmful or offensive. SCRC collects materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. These materials document the time period when they were created and the view of their creator. As a result, some may demonstrate racist and offensive views that do not reflect the values of UK Libraries.

If you find description with problematic language that you think SCRC should review, please contact us at SCRC@uky.edu.
