Interview with Brian Gustafson, March 1, 2023

Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Gustafson and his wife joined the Peace Corps after he worked in venture capital for a few years. After pre-service training in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1994, they worked together in Bánica with a micro-finance fund associated with Catholic Relief Services. The fund’s Executive Director and Gustafson met with prospective loan recipients informing them of the loan application process, and with current loan recipients monitoring the loans. They were instrumental in funding an increased number of applications from women, who, then, had a 100% rate of loan repayment. Among the businesses funded were seamstresses, carpenters, colmados for the sale of staple foods, and the production and sale of cassava bread. Gustafson’s secondary project was teaching middle schoolers Junior Achievement curriculum in Spanish. In the community school, he and his wife painted a large map of the world, and filled in countries as they studied them with the students. From his service, Gustafson learned to lead from behind in the work setting, and to partner with his wife to overcome obstacles.
