Interview Summary
Michael H. Anderson served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia from 1968 through 1971, in the Education Program. Michael’s group, Malaysia XX, trained in the plantation town of Honomu, near Hilo, Hawaii, and in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. He was assigned to teach English in the central Malay-Medium National Primary School in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Michael also started a school library, assisted with Boy Scouts, and organized a first aid training course. Michael extended, and spent his third year training journalists at the Southeast Asia Press Center, under the Ministry of Information, in Kuala Lumpur. He helped teach the first university level Journalism and Mass Communication courses at Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. After Peace Corps, Michael earned a Masters Degree at University of Minnesota, and PhD at the University of Hawaii, on an East-West Center grant. Continuing his relationship with Southeast Asia, he did his doctoral research in Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. Michael joined the Foreign Service in 1981, and spent his entire career doing public diplomacy in Asia.
