Interview with Zachary Mark Adams, November 18, 2021
Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Zachary Mark Adams served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo from 2017-2019 in a Health program. Following mission work in Paris, Zach looked for a program that directly served the physical and medical needs of less advantaged communities and found Peace Corps. In training, Zach’s fluency in French allowed him to concentrate on learning Ewe, a widely spoken local language. His site was Agavé, a community of about 2,500 in the plateau region, where he had been assigned to work with a health clinic serving thirteen other villages in the region. In his first year, Zach primarily worked assisting at the clinic, although he began to teach health classes in Agavé and the surrounding villages. By his second year, Zach recognized that his most sustainable contributions would be working with young people. He helped to organize a national camp and formed a club for new fathers. Following his return to the U.S., Zach intended to pursue a career in health but realized that his real interest was working with troubled youth.Interview Accession
