Interview Summary

Saylor begins by explaining how he began working for the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1972. Saylor shares an overview of his career with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Saylor's specialty was fish identification and he was called if there were any issues in identifying a species. The TVA sent Saylor to the YMCA to learn scuba diving, so he could dive to the bottom of nets they set. He shares some scuba diving stories. Saylor describes his involvement on the Tellico project and the issue that occurred when they discovered an endangered species of snail darter in the area. Saylor describes his work with mussels, primarily on the Duck River in conjunction with the proposed Columbia Dam. Saylor discusses the use of the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) in monitoring water quality. Saylor shares his thoughts about working on the clean water teams focusing on watersheds, and working with and educating the public. He discusses the major changes he saw in TVA throughout his 42-year career, including a new focus on environmentalism and the shift from Congressionally-appropriated funding to reliance on TVA power-generation revenues.
