Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project

Interview Summary

Moriah Adele Washington served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica from 2007 through 2009 in the Child, Youth, and Families Program. Moriah grew up in a military family, living in several places, and always had the desire to serve her country. Two of her professors at Berea College in Kentucky were RPCVs, and encouraged students to volunteer. She studied abroad in Ghana and Nicaragua, shaping her desire to serve abroad. While serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer with City Year New Hampshire, Moriah decided that she definitely wanted to be a Peace Corps Volunteer. Her Peace Corps training was conducted in the Desamparados in San Jose Province. Moriah was assigned to San Pedro de Poas in Alajuela Province. She taught life skills to elementary students, young adults and women’s groups throughout the community. After an earthquake struck, Moriah remained in her community to help with recovery. She obtained a small grant and started an after school program providing students with educational and recreational activities. Moriah worked with non-profit organizations for several years, and now works in emergency management. She has made return visits to Costa Rica, including an intercultural trip she organized to bring high school students from the South Bronx.
