Interview Summary

Sean Bailey was a Community Development volunteer in the small village of La Gracia, Belize, from 1992-1994. He was 34 and a reporter when he joined with his wife, fulfilling a long-time dream. La Gracia was being carved out of the tropical bush for refugees from El Salvador and Guatemala who had nothing. Sean helped the villagers get a water system, road, and school built. In addition, they taught some public health and ESL classes. A local Mennonite built them a one-room hut to live in. Their diet was mainly rice and beans, with occasional bush meat that the villagers would share. During his second year, he worked with other volunteers in San Ignacio to develop a conservation foundation and taught journalism at a high school. He returned to La Gracia three years ago and was pleased to see the water system and school remained in full use—sustainable development.
