Project: Peace Corps: The Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Oral History Project
Interview Summary
Cherie Lockett served in Senegal, 1979-1981. Her assignment was called Rural Animation. The work included organizing, health and nutrition education, and creating a community garden to support nutrition. She also worked on a mud/clay closed oven project. Cherie trained in Thies before going to her permanent site of N’gogom. There she worked with her host mother (in whose family compound Cherie resided), who was the President of a five-village women’s group, on gardening and health education projects. Cherie worked closely with the villagers and helped to create a team that galvanized the energies of all five villages, integrating community organizing with culturally appropriate approaches. Cherie comes from a family committed to social justice. She described her volunteer experience as coming together in a dialog--building relationship. She recognizes the importance of travel as a way to interface with the rest of the human community.Interview Accession
