Interview Summary

Melissa Taylor was raised by a single mother who instilled in her a love for travel. She has a graduate certificate in community health, sexual education, and reproductive health. She received an invitation from Peace Corps to Guyana to work in health. She trained in Soesdyke where she learned Creole. Taylor was assigned to work in New Amsterdam, Guyana. A group of concerned teachers requested a Volunteer to work in sex education. Taylor developed a program of training trainers with an interactive approach in a school three days a week, as well as facilitating community workshops e.g. “Your Vagina and You” with participants from a nursing school, prison, and women’s groups. At a local library, she trained on condom use. She also worked with the Ministry of Health on assuring the medical accuracy of a national sex education curriculum. Her Wednesday television call-in program on health was well received.
