Interview Summary

Tamar Besson served as a Health and Nutrition Volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 1982-1984. Originally from Los Altos, California, it was during her college years when she worked on a Kibbutz in Israel that started her journey towards the Peace Corps, which she joined right after she graduated. Training focused on Spanish language, technical assistance and Dominican culture. Her first site was in Azua where she worked with the Ministerio de Agricultura and Mujeres en Desarrollo. She was then chosen to be a Volunteer Coordinator and ended up extending her service. Upon returning to the US, she received her Master’s in Public Health from Yale and her Nurse Practitioner degree from University of California, San Francisco, in between serving as a Volunteer Trainer for the Peace Corps in Paraguay and Honduras. Tamar lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and works as a Nurse Practitioner for the Department of Public Health and as a clinician in county health clinics.
