Interview Summary
Born in Alabama, Mr. Wallace was a union organizer for the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in Harlan, Kentucky and in West Virginia during the 1930's. He discusses his former employment with the McDowell County West Virginia Department of Public Welfare, United States Public Health Service during World War II, and as a disc jockey at a radio station. Mr. Wallace discusses his role in the civil rights movement both in Alabama and Lexington, African American participation in local politics, the role of African American ministers within their community, and the lack of support shown by the African American community for black owned businesses.Interview Accession
