This project illustrates how people of various backgrounds, occupations, socioeconomic classes, and regions understood and experienced the popularization of twentieth-century folk art. Interviews focus on the life and career of Kentucky woodcarver Edgar Tolson. Interviewees include Tolson's family and friends, museum professionals, gallery owners, folk art promoters, collectors, authors and critics, working artists, students and faculty in the University of Kentucky art department, and members of the Appalachian Volunteers.
